Mr. Dotun Shonde, the General Manager, Courier and Logistics Regulatory Department (CLRD) of the NIPOST, explained that the main goal of the exercise was to sanitise the sector infiltrated by unlicensed and illegal operators nationwide.

“There abound the issue of public safety and security threat due to carriage of illicit drugs and prohibited items like small arms and ammunition, guns, gold, monies and obscene items,” he said.

He added that unethical sharp practices like price undercutting, pilfering, broaching, damages, loss and dumping of customers’ items, poaching and subletting of operating licenses were practised, with a mountain of public complaints about customers being duped or obtaining money from them under false pretences, no traceable office address nor registered brand name.

He said that the illegal operators were operating without licenses from NIPOST, thereby evading tax and undermining the postal regulations.

He said that the exercise was carried out in collaboration with the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

He said that some of the illegal operators were arrested and their vehicles impounded, while others were issued warning letters to regularize their operations or face sanctions.

He added that NIPOST had the mandate to regulate the courier and logistics industry in Nigeria, and to ensure compliance with the Postal Act of 2004 and the Courier Regulatory Service Guidelines of 2020.

He said that NIPOST was also working to protect the interests of consumers and investors in the industry, by ensuring quality service delivery and fair competition.

He urged the public to patronize only licensed courier and logistics operators, and to report any illegal or substandard service to NIPOST for appropriate action.

He also appealed to the illegal operators to obtain their licenses from NIPOST and operate within the ambit of the law, or risk prosecution and closure of their businesses.
